A fresh set of AA Alkaline batteries rated at 2500 mAh would provide roughly 30 hours of runtime if the radio is played at a moderate volume level.
If you do not replace the batteries within a 3 minute time period, you will lose all of the programming that you've done in the radio.

Yes this is normal. The DT-220A has an auto-shutoff function that turns off the radio automatically after 90 minutes.
To disable the 90 Minute Auto-Shutoff" on your DT-220A, when turning on the radio, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds until a clock with a "90" on it disappears from the LCD display. Since the 90-minute auto shutoff is a default setting on the radio, the radio reverts to that auto-shutoff mode whenever the radio is turned off.
Be sure that the DT-220A is off. The clock can only be set if the radio is not powered up.
The backlight will be illuminated for 7 seconds.
The only button that functions while the radio is "locked" is the display light button.

Slide the LOUDSPEAKER/HEADPHONE switch to the headphone position. This will mute the external speaker and transfer the audio to the earbuds.

The ST/MO switch gives you the choice of listening to either in Stereo (ST) or Mono (MO) through your earbuds or headphones. This switch is useful when listening to weak FM stations that have some hiss when you tune to the station. To reduce the hiss you just have to switch from ST (stereo) to MO (mono) listening. Please note that the ST/MO switch only works while listening to the radio via earbuds or headphones. When listening to the radio via the external speaker you will always be listening in Mono.
